A yeast infection is the result of excessive yeast growth in the body. Yeast is a type of fungus. Candida yeast infection, also referred to as Candidiasis, is the most commonly contracted type of yeast infection. There are over 20 different species of Candida, the most common being Candida albicans.

The fungi can live on any surface of the body and affects both men and women. In some conditions these fungi can grow and cause infection. Some of the most common yeast infections include vaginal yeast infections, penile yeast infections, thrush (an oral infection of the mouth), diaper rash in infants and older adults, nail bed infections and skin infections.

A yeast infection affecting the vagina or the penis is quite common. Since the vagina and penis areas are warm, dark and moist, they give the fungi the best conditions for growth. Other places on the body that might be at risk include the armpits, cuts, scrapes, in the mouth, diaper areas or areas that are covered tightly by clothing for long periods of time.

Increasing with age is the probability of adults contracting an oral yeast infection. Older adults can get Candidiasis infections around dentures, nail beds, under the folds of skin underneath breasts or lower abdomen and under other skin folds on the body.

In some rare cases, a yeast infection could spread throughout the whole body. This is known as systemic candida disease. Systemic Candida disease is equally dangerous in both men and women. In this condition, the fungus enters into the bloodstream and then spreads throughout the entire body. When this happens, which again, is rare, up to 45% of the suffering may die. Sometimes, even the most common oral and vaginal yeast infections can be resistant to the average treatment options.

A Candida yeast infection that keeps coming back could be a sign that something more serious is going on in your body, including Diabetes or an immune system issue. If you suspect that you have a yeast infection, it is vitally important that you treat the infection before it worsens. Treating the infection quickly can greatly shorten the amount of time that you are stuck with painful and embarrassing symptoms.

A yeast infection is a common problem. It is rare that someone will go his or her entire life without having at least a mild yeast infection. In 20% to 50% of otherwise healthy women, yeast is found in the vagina. Yeast infections are also quite common in men, affecting the groin area and the penis. Many people with a yeast infection immediately feel that they should ask their doctor for an antibiotic or a steroid to cure the infection, but this is not the case. . The use of antibiotics or steroids can actually promote the growth of yeast by lowering the amount of pro biotic (good bacteria) in the body.

The important thing to remember is that you can treat a Candida yeast infection. Knowing that you have the option of alleviating those potentially dangerous symptoms, at home and without an embarrassing visit to a doctor, is a relief in itself. You do not have to suffer with this disease as long as you take the time to learn about your best option. Knowledge and treatment are your top weapons for fighting this embarrassing issue.
